There are two different types of resin that can be used for resin drive installations, either Epoxy resin, which is less common these days due to the fact that it isn’t as hardwearing as our second resin option, which is Polyurethane.
Polyurethane resin has excellent bonding properties and can bear much higher loads than epoxy resin, making it the resin of choice for most resin bound driveway contractors. It is more resistant to damage, as well as oil and pretor spillages as long as they’re cleaned up quickly!
There is also a choice of the size of your aggregate stone, ranging from as little as 1mm to 10mm.
Resin aggregate driveways are absolutely a premium product and provide a finish to your home that will be wowing your neighbours for years to come!

How much do Resin Bound Driveways cost in the UK per m2?
In order to give a fully accurate quote for our resin bound driveways, we need to visit the site to firstly examine the existing surface and determine what, if any preparation or groundwork needs to be done.
There are then different specifications and considerations for each job, including finishes, but as a rough guide resin bonded drives cost around £50 - £80 per square metre, but this can exclude more complex base preparations; different sub-base preparation can be more time consuming and therefore increase labour costs.
It’s important to note that when comparing quotes, you should try and compare like for like quality. For example, the thickness of the resin bound aggregate can vary by installer and we recommend installation of a minimum 18mm thickness for driveways.

How is a resin drive laid?
Resin bound driveways can be laid directly on top of tarmac, paving, block paving and concrete; this is due to the fact that it is thin and flexible yet hard wearing. The aggregate can be laid directly onto of existing surfaces as long as they are solid (they cannot be laid directly onto hardcore) and it can cover the ugliest of existing driveways and patios, which is what makes resin driveways such a flexible and useful solution to modernising your outdoor ground space.
Because resin and aggregate can be installed directly on to an existing tarmac, concrete or paved surface means that you don’t need to dig it up, so you don’t need a skip or loads of mess!
There is some preparation still required before laying on top of existing drives such as block paving to ensure than the resin doesn’t crack over time due to movement in the blocks. This is achieved by using a polymer screed (such as Basefix) over the top of the blocks to strengthen the surface, a primer is also used to prepare the surface
What can you lay a resin bound driveway on top of?
You can lay a resin bound aggregate driveway over the top of most solid surfaces including tarmac, block paving and concrete. The surfaces will need to properly prepared using a primer and at least a 10mm screed of polymer to strengthen the existing surface.
It can’t be laid on top of hardcore as it is not solid.
How long does a Resin Bound Driveway last?
If properly installed there is no reason why your new resin driveway shouldn’t last for 25 - 30 years if it is properly maintained.
Resin driveways are extremely hardwearing so as long as the prep is done right and the resin bound aggregate is set to the correct thickness for the usage, it’ll see you through for a long time.
You may sometimes get guarantees that range from 5 - 15 years but the driveway or patio, if properly prepared on top of a sold surface, should last for decades.
Resin Bound Driveway pros and cons
There really aren’t many disadvantages to resin bound driveway or problems that you will face with resin aggregate if it is installed correctly by a qualified company, however if they are installed incorrectly, ie too thin for a required usage, incorrect priming or base coats of screed, or not a fully sold surface then the resin bound aggregate could crack. But, using a reliable resin bound installer should mean you new resin aggregate solution should last for decades.
We also get asked ‘are resin bound driveways expensive?’ so one of the other things to mention is that resin bound driveways are a premium solution for your outdoor space and therefore can be more expensive that alternative routes such as concrete, tarmac or block paving, but it is worth it when you see the stunning finish that will last!
We’ve already been through many of the pros of resin drive solutions but we’ll list them quickly here, it’s hardwearing, it’s beautiful, it’s porous, it’s durable, it’s doesn’t need drainage, it’s weed resistant, it doesn’t get too hot, there are no loose chippings, it’s anti slip and it’s so agile… what are you waiting for?
