What is External Wall Insulation?
Put simply, External Wall Insulation (EWI) is a layer of insulation that is fixed to the outside wall of a property. It is thermally insulated and once rendered decorates and modernises your home’s exterior.

EWI is fixed to the wall uses adhesive and mechanical fixings. There is then a base coat (or two) of reinforced cement-based render / plasterwork, followed by a top coat of often silicone render due to its flexible properties and therefore less tendencies to crack like many render options.
You also have the option to fit cladding outside of the EWI but this can often be more expensive than many of your rendering options.
There must moisture consideration during the installation process to prevent condensation; this may include insulating recess areas around window, extending window sills and potentially extending roof overhangs, especially on extensions.
This will all be given due care and attention by a reliable installer. Insulation thickness can sometimes be reduced around ledges to ensure there is no opportunity for rain water to get in behind the EWI solution.
What is External Wall Insulation made of?
EWI is often made up of two types of foam, phenolic and polyurethane, as well as an expanded polystyrene and mineral wool. There is usually a flame-retardant additive added too.
We often use the reputable and leading supplier of EWI systems, Jablite.
Does adding External Wall Insulation save on energy your energy bills in the UK?

How much does external wall insulation cost?
External Wall Insulation costs will of course vary depending on the type of house you have and the number of walls you need to cover, if you have a detached house and four walls then the costs will be higher, if you own a mid terrace house and only need the front and back then it will be less.
The cost of External Wall Insulation is based on a price per square metre which may then increase or decrease based on the work that is needed to remove or repair existing render or cladding, the thickness and type of insulation you choose, the number of base layers required, then finally the outer finish you require, such as silicone render or cladding.
The price per square metre will often depend on your location in the UK, with the south of England usually having higher building costs than the north.
Once each of your walls have been measured, then measurements of your windows, doors and garage doors etc can subtracted to create the exact amount of square metres that will be charged. There is a cost of materials and then labour, although these are often given as one price.
Does EWI help to reduce CO2 emissions?
UK homes need to be properly insulated in order to meet government targets for reducing emissions and energy usage. Insulation is a proven way to do this and you can insulate in a number of ways including external wall insulation, cavity wall insulation and loft insulation.
So, yes EWI can play an important factor in making sure your home is energy efficient and in line with government targets to reduce CO2 emissions.
How thick does External Wall Insulation need to be?
You can purchase External Wall Insulation between 20mm and 100mm, however it is recommended to be between 50mm - 100mm thick to give the most energy efficient benefit. It will obviously depend on how much space you have to play with as the thicker the insulation the more it will protrude from your outer wall.
It is sometimes necessary to shave down the thickness of your External Wall Insulation in some areas of your exterior in order to make sure that water cannot trickle off of edges and behind the insulation itself which can lead to problems.
This can sometimes be done underneath windowsills or other elements of the wall that water could potentially drip from. The insulation with a reduced thickness in these areas will still stop a cold bridge from appearing around your windows and other areas of the house that may have hold for pipework etc.
It is also sometimes necessary to use expanding builders foam around certain edges to maintain the thermal efficiency of your External Wall Insulation solution.
Do I need to insulate all the way around my house to get the benefit from External Wall Insulation?
In short, yes. We would recommend insulating all of your exterior walls when undertaking an EWI project. If you leave one wall uninsulated or a section of a wall, then that area could still lose heat and be thermally inefficient, which could undo the hard work (and costs) that you have put into ensuring other walls are insulated.
Make your home beautiful with EWI.
How long does External Wall Insulation last?
External Wall Insulation is made to last for decades. Most products have a life expectancy of 30 years, so installing solid wall insulation to the outside of your property is a worthwhile investment that will certainly give you your money’s worth over that time in energy costs alone, not to mention house value increases that could be attributed to your house’s new curb appeal.
What are the pros and cons of external wall insulation?
We’ve already covered the pros of External Wall Insulation throughout this page, in summary, it looks great, it’s energy efficient, it could reduce your energy bills, it could increase the value of your house!

The installation can be slightly disruptive outside your home for the week or two that it takes to implement, this can include scaffolding which ca nee charged as an additional cost.

It may not be suitable for listed buildings
If installed incorrectly it can lead to damp problems should moisture get behind the insulation
